This meeting will feature author and historian Andrew Hartman and will discuss his 2025 book Karl Marx in America. Hartman’s book is one of the only comprehensive historical treatments of Karl Marx’s historical and intellectual legacy in American political and philosophical culture. Rather than treat Marx as a distant German ghost from far-away Europe, Hartman emphasizes Karl Marx’s proximity to America, interest in America during his lifetime, and continuing legacy as a definitive force in the most important struggles of the 20th and 21st centuries. This meeting will explore and unpack Karl Marx in America as a work of intellectual history and as an intervention in the historical and contemporary conflicts that have defined American politics.
Speakers:
Tim Casement, scholar of literary theory and a member of the International Marxist-Humanist Organization
Kevin B. Anderson, author of Late Marx’s Revolutionary Roads (2025)
With a response by
Andrew Hartman, author of Karl Marx in America (2025)
Sponsored by California Chapter, International Marxist-Humanist Organization
