In a careful reading that constitutes one of the best non-Marxist accounts of Marx, Donald N. Levine places Marx inside the German idealist tradition. However, he understates his continuing debt to G. W. F. Hegel. While pointing correctly to Marx’s internationalism and cosmopolitanism, Levine underplays Marx’s substantial writings on nationalism, race, and ethnicity.
